Why now

A tradition with the moral voice — and the reach — to meet this moment.

Mainline Protestant communities hold deep organizing capacity, moral authority, and millions of congregants ready to be invited more fully into the work of defending and renewing democracy.

Coordinated presence amplifies what is already underway: it shapes a coherent national narrative, surfaces strategic insight across regions, and opens pathways into denominations and congregations the broader pro-democracy movement is still getting to know.

What we are building toward

A Mainline Protestant tradition that is fully awake to this moment.

We draw on our deepest theological convictions to defend the rule of law, free and fair elections, checks and balances, and accountability to the people — the institutional conditions under which all communities can flourish. But we also hold a longer view: we are not defending a broken system. We are working toward a democracy worth belonging to.

THE GROUNDING VISION

Organizing to Reimagine + Renew Democracy

An organizing intervention — not a curriculum — that brings everyday people in Mainline congregations into shared analysis and collective action on the threats facing democratic life.

Cross-stream collaboration

Illuminated Cities

A coordinated, cross-stream election defense effort focused on key cities seen as vulnerable to interference with the 2026 midterms. MPS activates Mainline Protestant congregational networks in each geography.

Who's at the table

Denominations, networks, and ecumenical partners — organizing together.

MPS includes denominations historically and more recently regarded as Mainline Protestant, Peace Church traditions, and the organizing networks that partner alongside them. The boundaries are intentionally porous.

Additional denominational and ecumenical partners are actively engaged in conversation with MPS and are expected to join the table as the initiative unfolds.
